Three Common Problems of Air Compressors
July 18, 2019

An industrial air compressor can be a valuable piece of equipment for keeping facility operations running smoothly. Just like with any other well-used piece of equipment, an air compressor may experience issues from time to time. Here are three common compressor issues that can be resolved with the help of one of our experienced technicians.

1. Excessive Oil Consumption

Rotary screw and reciprocating piston air compressors may experience this issue, which can be caused by worn out piston rings, leaks or obstructed air filters. Obstructed air paths will need a professional cleaning, while a leak is a much more serious issue that requires repair to avoid fires or explosions.

2. Overheating

Overheating of the compressor occurs with persistent, high-intensity use, where the compressor is not given enough time to cool down. Overheating can also be caused by low oil levels and clogged air intake filters. If you’re overworking your industrial air compressor, consider having it retrofitted for increased efficiency, or simply purchasing an additional compressor to help with the workload.

3. Failure to Generate Air Pressure

This is another issue that could arise from clogged filters or air paths. Low or no air pressure can also be caused by loose parts that require tightening, a faulty air-intake pump or a gasket issue. If the compressor motor is running, but no air is produced, the air-intake pump could be the culprit. The gasket between the low- and high-pressure compartments may need replacing if only small amounts of pressure are being generated.
